Nagarjun Hill Trek/Jamacho – Day Hike

Nagarjun Hill Trek is one of the easier and short treks in a close distance from Kathmandu valley which includes nature walk, Himalaya view, aerial view of Kathmandu valley and Buddhist monastery, Gumba and caves. Also known as the Jamacho Hill trek, this trek is situated in an isolated, peaceful area which gives an opportunity to divulge in natural beauty, bird watching and some glimpse mammals. If you are interested to explore the natural fauna and flora nearby Kathmandu, in a half day, we can choose Nagarjuna hill trek to admire view of entire Kathmandu valley especially, Monkey Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square,White Gumba, and mountain peaks to the north.

Day 01: 6 Hours Hiking

A professional tour guide comes to your hotel to pick you up with a private van, drive northwest for 20 minutes and reach the gate of Nagarjun forest, the entrance gate for Shivapuri National Park. After short briefing we start walking up via lush forest. 5 km trek can be walked with in about 3 hrs. On the way, we can visit different legendry caves associated with Buddhism and Lord Buddha. There is one cave called Nagarjun cave to the north side of hill. This cave is believed to be a meditation place of Guru Rimpoche. There is image of Nagarjuna Buddha and known as Laxmi Gufa (Cave) by local people. This cave is also known as Buffalo Cave by Tibetan. Legend says that when Nararjuna was meditating here, a buffalo herdsman used to come and offer dairy products. One day Nagarjuna told him to meditate there, but all the time he was thinking of his buffalo and ultimately he transferred as buffalo. At last he shot the cave by his horn and went to heaven. The hole is believed to be made by his horn.While walking via Raniban we see several caves and Buddhist shrines. The more we hike the more spectacular view of Kathmndu valley with foreground view of Swayambhunath in south and snowcapped mountains and villages and green hills of Nuwakot district we enjoy. After short rest with photo session we again follow route that curves south on the top hill until we reach to Jamacho Gumba for another one and half hour via Rani Ban( Queen Forest). Different spices of birds like white backed vulture, Himalayan griffon, black vulture, dark kite, hen harrier, goshawk, sparrow hawk, sikhra, common buzzard, Asian black eagle, magpies, kalij pheasant, leafbirds, flycatcher and some appears before us and sometimes we see goral, jungle cat Felischaus, Himalayan sparrow Capricornisthar, wild boar Susscrofa, and monkeys too. Upon reaching on hilltop we see a colorful Jamacho Gumba flapping with Buddhist praying flags. We will have packet lunch there. After having lunch and rest in peaceful Gumba we enjoy the 360 degree view of Kathmandu valley, Swayambhunath and White Gumba. The panoramic view of Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal and Langtang makes your trek worth. Take photos, juxtaposing Himalaya peaks and Kathmandu valley. Then we will descend downhill by same step route that we took while trekking up, for two hours. Vehicle waits us at the gate and drops us to Hotel.
