The basic permits required for the Everest Base Camp trek are Sagarmatha National Park permit, Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit. The Sagarmatha National Park permit as the name suggests is the permit required for trekking the premises of the pristine Sagarmatha National Park.

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit is only required if you start your Everest Base Camp trek journey Jiri. The classic Jiri to EBC trek is the original route used by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay for the first Everest expedition.

A recent decentralization of the government has made the Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card no longer valid for treks in the Everest region. Instead a local area permit or the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit was introduced.

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is directly collected by the local government. You will not get this permit at Kathmandu and is only available at Lukla. All other permits are available at the Nepal Tourism Board’s office in Kathmandu.

Various Everest Base Camp Trek Permit Costs

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

The Sagarmatha National Park permit is necessary for trekking the beautiful landscapes of Sagarmatha National parks. Established in 1976, Sagarmatha National Park is a protected area around the Everest region.

Hence, trekkers trekking the pristine foothill of the Everest Base Camp has to have the Sagarmatha National Park permit.

Cost

The Sagarmatha National Park permit is 3000 NPR which is Approx US $30. Please note that this fee is only for foreigners. For SAARC Nationals, the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit fee is 1,500 NPR

Where Can I get Sagarmatha National Park Permit?

The Sagarmatha National Park Permit is available at the office of Nepal Tourism Board located in Pradarshani Marg, Kathmandu. It is just 30 mins walk away from Thamel.

Alternatively, you can also get the Sagarmatha National Park Permit at Monjo. The small settlement of Monjo is an entrance to Sagarmatha National Park.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit was duly imposed in the Everest region treks from October 1, 2018. This local area permit replaces the Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card. You don’t require a photograph for this permit.

Trekkers do not require the TIMS card to trek in the Everest region anymore. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is for all areas of ward no 5 of the rural municipality. You need to deposit the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit fee at the Lukla Check Post.

Cost

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit fee gets collected by the local government of Solukhumbu district. For foreigners, the cost of the permit is USD 20 per person (approximately NPR 2000). The cost is the same for individual as well as group trekkers.

Where Can I get the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit?

You can get this permit at Lukla if you are taking the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. You can also get this permit in Monjo if you trek from Jiri or Salleri. Please note that this permit is not available at Nepal Tourism Board’s office in Kathmandu.

Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (Additional Permit)

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit is an additional permit and is only required if you are planning to trek the Everest Base Camp from Jiri. The trails from Jiri falls under the conservation area, hence the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit is necessary.

Cost

Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit is Rs 2000 NPR if you get it from the Nepal Tourism Board, in Kathmandu. If you want to get it from Shivalaya checkpoint, the price gets doubled to Rs 4000 NPR.

Where Can I get the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit?

You can get the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit either at the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Shivalaya Checkpoint. But since, the price is twice at Shivalaya Checkpoint, it is advisable to get the permit at the Nepal Tourism Board, in Kathmandu.
